Kanaha
is the best spot for families or groups of people with various levels of windsurfing abilities. This is the also the best spot for children. Kanaha can be reached by returning to the airport. To reach Kanaha Beach Park you must circle around the airport terminals to the street (Koeheke Street) where the rental cars are picked up and returned. Turn right and go past the rental car facilities until it dead-ends at Amala Place. Turn right and drive until
you reach the last entrance to Kanaha Beach Park (skip the first and second entrances). You can also reach Kanaha by going to the harbor area, and turning right on Amala Place. The best facilities for windsurfing and families are located at the end of Kanaha Beach Park. A roped off area in the water is an ideal place for the kids to play (windsurfers must stay out of the roped off area - the lifeguards can and will confiscate your equipment). Kanaha usually provides good flat water sailing inside the reefs and can have excellent wave sailing conditions, especially in the spring and fall. Kanaha provides shady areas, showers, barbecues, grass rigging areas and good parking. Uppers, Camp One, and Spreckelsville can all be reached by sailing upwind from
Kanaha.
Spreckelsville
is located just to the East of Kanaha. Go down the Hana Hwy towards Paia and turn left on Stable road, go past the stables and take the first right, which is a rough dirt road leading to beach. Be careful where you park as you may get blocked in on good days.
Hookipa is located approximately 1/2 mile (1 KM) past
Kuau on the Hana Highway. It is one of the best wavesailing locations in the world. Generally considered for experts only, it has a tricky shorebreak, can have dangerous currents and when the waves are up, can instantly reduce your favorite mast or board to garbage. It is one of the best places to watch windsurfing and when the wind dies down, a good place to surf. Approximately 1/4 mile (0.4 KM) downwind from Hookipa is Lanes which is usually less crowded and easier on your equipment.
Kuau
is located just downwind (west) of Hookipa. The waves are farther out and not quite as steep as Hookipa. The best spot to start is behind the beach access path located on Aleiki Place (turn right at the market in Kuau on Hana Hwy, then right on Aleiki Pl.). Kuau, like Hookipa is for experts only.
Kihei is located on the south side of the island. Kihei can be very windy and is usually the only place to sail when the Kona winds are blowing or the trade winds are coming directly from the north. The best windsurfing spot is located at the end of Ohukai street (the first grassy area as you drive on South Kihei Road towards the center of Kihei). The second spot is located behind the Maui Sunset condominiums and a third is located at Kalama Beach Park (at the large whale sculpture in Kihei town). |
